KYKLOS’ AIMS AND PROGRAMS

Like the society of Paros in which we live, the members of Kyklos have many and diverse backgrounds.  Like their fellow citizens of contemporary Paros, they have varied talents, experiences and accomplishments of its members.  Kyklos aims to draw upon this variety of talent and experience to enrich and enliven the life and experience of its members and of Paros society at large by organizing and presenting programs relating to all the arts, intellectual endeavors and social concerns.

We have in the past and will continue in the future to organize concerts, theater, lectures and discussions on historical, archaeological and social research, poetry and other literary readings and analysis.  Of particular interest is the history and traditions of Paros, and the protection of its unique towns, villages and landscape from degradation resulting from ill-considered commercial exploitation and anarchic construction.

The programs we have presented in the past have included:

  • a lecture on the dramatic events that unfolded in Paros during the Second World War,
  • a presentation of an archive of photographic and cinematic records of Paros dating from the middle of the last century,
  • plays by a French theater group associated with Kyklos,
  • a lecture on the construction and functioning of traditional Parian farm houses,
  • a lecture on the surviving ancient marble quarries,
  • a film on the Rembetico, the popular Greek music genre,
  • a lecture on the significance of the ancient Parian marble industry, its role in the economy, and for the influence it gave the island throughout the ancient Mediterranean world,
  • readings of poetry and short stories by member-authors,

HISTORY AND FORMATION OF KYKLOS PAROS

KYKLOS began as a group of friends that wanted to share their talents, expertise and experience and that of their friends and acquaintances in Paros among themselves and the wider public in order to enrich their own cultural life and that of their community. In pursuit of this aim they organized lectures, seminars, discussions and concerts which were open to all, and attracted a wider public as audience and participants.

Recognizing the advantages of formal association, they decided to give permanence to their group and facilitate their operations by organizing as a not-for-profit cultural association under the Greek Civil code and registering in the public registry of civic associations. On September 17, 2023, they met in Parikia to found KYKLOS PAROS as a not-for-profit cultural association; they adopted a constitution (Statute of KYKLOS PAROS dated 17-09-2023), and elected a board of directors to take the necessary legal steps for recognition and registration and to govern the association while under formation.

On 16 January 2024, the Civil Magistrates Court of Paros granted our petition for recognition and ordered the registration of the KYKLOS in the registry of civic associations. The registration was accomplished on 22 April 2024, and founding members held the first regular meeting of the General Assembly of the Association on18 June 2024.

The First General Assembly admitted new members, and elected the first regular Board of Directors and a Board of Auditors which subsequently elected the officers of the Association. The members of the Board and officers, who will serve for a term of two years, are listed below.

THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE ASSOCIATION

The Constitution of the Association provides that General Assembly of the members is highest authority of the Association, with competence to decide on all Association matters. It meets in regular sessions at least once every year, and in special sessions whenever properly convened by the President.

The Board of Directors, elected by the General Assembly is charged with administering the affairs of the association, and with electing the President and other officers of the Association, who have specific responsibilities in the administration and representation of the Association. The names of the currently serving officers are listed below.

THE FINANCES OF THE ASSOCIATION

The Association is entirely independent financially. The annual dues and voluntary contribution of its members are its only sources of income from which we meet the expenses of its administration and its programs.

In addition to contributions from its members, it gratefully accepts contributions from its supporters and friends that wish to advance its programs. A principal supporter at this time is the Municipality of Paros which makes available gratis the hall of the Municipal Cultural Center of Paroikia for the Association’s meetings and programs on a shared basis with other civil groups.

The offices and directors serve without compensation. Compensation is paid as necessary for legal and accounting services. The Association may also request, and, on occasion, require entrance fees to specific programs and events in order to defray expenses, but maintains at all times the non-profit nature of its operation.

Kyklos is entirely dependent on the support of its members and friends for its finances, and on their participation and volunteer work in organizing its programs. We encourage all those who share our aims to become members and take part in realizing them: fill out the member application form and submit it online.
