Family, for better or worse, is there any such thing as the functional family?

KYKLOS PAROS is delighted to host Lulu Keating for the second time.
Keating is an artist working in two mediums, film and literary writing.
For over forty years, she has created films across all genres – documentary, dramatic features and shorts, animation,
and experimental works – making at least one film every year.

Part I – Film Screening and Discussion

The Moody Brood (40 minutes) Followed by discussion

“Originally, I set out to make a simple portrait about my family. I wondered how eleven children who share the same socio-economic background can mature into such diverse adults. I wanted to explore the question of what makes us who we are – nature or nurture.”
– Lulu Keating

Because of the generosity of her family, The Moody Brood delves into deeper questions, leaving us to ask: Can we ever shake off those early experiences and associations that formed us?

The discussion following the screening will explore themes of family, identity, and the balance between nature and nurture, as well as Keating’s life and work as an independent filmmaker since 1980.

Part II – Reading and Conversation

Reading from Splinter and Shard,
followed by open discussion. In recent years, she has focused her creative energy on writing.

Her short story collection Splinter and Shard was published in 2024.

Keating will read selected stories from her recent collection and invite conversation about how writers draw on family in their work – the tension between honesty and discretion, and how readers often conflate fiction with autobiography.

An open Q&A will conclude the evening.  All welcome.
